The Clarity of Alignment: 3 Signs You’re Out of Step With God
There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that eight hours of sleep can’t touch. It’s the quiet weariness of being busy but unclear faithful in your intentions, yet mentally foggy, moving at full speed without any real confidence that you’re headed in the right direction.
If that strikes a chord, I don’t think you need to push harder. You might just need alignment.
For our devotional theme, The Clarity of Alignment, I’ve been sitting with one deeply personal question: Am I truly aligned with what God is doing in me right now, or am I just running ahead on my own steam?
When we step out of rhythm with Him, life rarely falls apart in dramatic fashion; instead, subtle friction creeps in. Here are three signs worth sitting with in your own heart:
1. You plan first, then ask God to bless the blueprints
We know Proverbs 3:5–6 by heart to trust the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. Yet so often, my default is the exact reverse. I strategize, map out solutions, exhaust my mental energy, and then tack on a prayer asking God to endorse the plan. Real alignment isn't just about involving God; it’s about the order of surrender. Trusting Him first means letting Him shape the agenda before the ink is dry.
2. Your heart is taking cues from the noise rather than the Word
Romans 12:2 reminds us that clarity about God’s good and perfect will begins with a renewed mind. But renewal requires quiet, deliberate intake. When my first reflex in the morning is checking notifications, emails, and news feeds before I open the Word, I notice how quickly anxiety replaces peace. What shapes your first thoughts will inevitably steer your day. If clarity feels elusive, look at what’s feeding your attention.
3. You’re scrambling instead of walking at God’s pace
In Psalm 46:10, God doesn’t offer a suggestion; He gives an anchor: “Be still, and know that I am God.” True stillness isn't inactivity or passivity it’s trust in motion. When every single day feels like an urgent scramble and every decision feels suffocating, that’s rarely just a full calendar. More often, it’s the strain of carrying burdens God never asked us to shoulder. God rarely hurries, and when we run ahead of His pace, we leave our peace behind.
Clarity doesn’t come from squinting harder at the future. It comes from looking directly at the One who holds it.
If any of these felt uncomfortably familiar, take a deep breath. That nudge isn't condemnation it’s an invitation to pause, realign, and step back into cadence with Grace.
